Question i have a problem with avi files - 08-16-2008

okay is it just me or does this happen to other people also. I'm just curious if it's just my computer. okay here's my problem I download an avi file and about 5 times out of 10 i get nothing except a green screen no matter what media player i use. I try to download the file again and the same thing just for a little longer. Now the files are saying they are complete and then when i open them nothing. I tried downloading the same file on my friend's macbook with the same results. Could someone possible tell me if there is something different about the avi files lately? Just curious is anyone else having this same problem? if someone could help me with this problem i would be grateful.

I have to say that I've never come across this issue before. I think that fidosdeader is probably right in that the file you are downloading is corrupt. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a change in format of AVI's but it could also be that you are missing a codec.

Just a few questions to try and narrow it down a bit
Are you having this issue with all AVI files you download, or just one in particular?
Does the sound play while it's showing the green screen?
Are you downloading the files with a download manager?

I'm assuming it's a direct download rather than a torrent, if you could copy and paste the link in here, or maybe PM me with the link to an AVI that you have downloaded and it didn't work, then I'll download it and see if it works for me.

Very basic second sig attempt

I think the downloaded files are fine and not corrupted but because of the updated HD visuals, ur CPU is unable to support the format. You can do two things to curb this problem. You can either download L-Lite MegaCodec pack from Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 4.1.4 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder. and use the Media Player Classic there.
If that fails to work, there is the problem of your monitors resolution. If you have old school CPU monitors and not the LCD ones, you will face this problem. I recommend changing ur monitor then.
If both things don't work, ur guess is good as mine.

no it's not just one but about one out of every five I try to download, no sound and no video if they don't download with nothing they download completely fine. No I'm not downloading with a download manager.

Thanks for the link but it won't work for my laptop I have a mac.

I have no problem watching HD quality on my mac in fact the HD avi files are the files that download with no problem it's the others that aren't HD that is the problem. Which is why I'm at a lost as to why this is happening. I have even tried downloading the same files from a window's based PC with the same results. From what I've read here I guess it would be safe to assume that the files are just corrupted.

okay going from what I'm hearing or reading actually I think it would be safe to assume the files are corrupted. Since this only seems to happen when i use one certain website if I just download a different format and convert it to avi it should be just find. I guess it's just my luck... lol... I tend to have this type of luck

Just my suggestion; however, you can try to use virtual Windows OS on your mac. That way you should be able to use any windows application and be fine. Also, considering mac has better processing than pc. It should work fine. o.o"

Hmm that really sucks, sorry I wasn't able to help, but it's sounding more and more like it is corrupt files from a dodgy site especially if it's doing the same thing for other computers and it's just that site all I can say is be glad you are using a Mac if you're visiting that site often chances are they have a few nasty little viruses or trojans hidden around their pages.

My suggestion now, find another source for the AVI's that they have. Maybe ask around BN if others know of good sources for the particular ones you are after. Best of luck for your search
