Calculus Homework

If anyone can help me with this, i would be greatly appreciative. (its from Calculus: early transcendentals 6th edition section 12.2 or essential Calculus: early transcendentals section 10.2 #30 if that helps)

Could you tell me the chapter name? It seems like Calculus 2. I haven't done this in like 3 years now. xD

r - r1 = (x - x1) + (y - y1)
r - r2 = (x - x2) + (y - y2)

|r - r1| = (x - x1)^2 + (y - y1)^2
|r - r2| = (x - x2)^2 + (y - y2)^2

|r - r1| + |r - r2| = (x - x1)^2 + (y - y1)^2 + (x - x2)^2 + (y - y2)^2 = k

That's where I got to. o.o Not sure if it's right; however, I basically just used basic Vector rules.

yeah, the problem is that it just gets worse from there when you start multiplying out, it gets to be about half a page long at one point.

I must be missing something that the teacher assumed was obvious. like the previous problem was |r-r1|=1 is the same as a circle with radius one with a center about (x1,y1), but i don't know how that could apply to this one.
