What anime would you consider to be a work of art? -

This is not asking "what is your favorite anime?" Try to think of something that was beautiful, inspirational or had a really driving message that made you think about it after watching.
e.g. my favorite anime is Bleach but I don't think it is a work of art, just an adventure.
1. Spice and Wolf -
This anime was beautifully well done and has a truly different and original setting to how the storyline is pursued.
2. Death Note -
Truly spectacular. Really made me think about the way we measure quality of life and our freedom.
3. FLCL -
This may seem a strange addition but there is such thing as contemporary art. Well, FLCL is a contemporary anime. Everything that happens in it is a metaphor. I re-watched it because I didn't understand it the first time through. Ever then I had to look up an analogy of the story to make sense of it.
Gurren Lagann easily and the ultimate work of art which i personally nickname "the beautiful Anime"....Wolfs Rain....from the music to the animation....just beautiful
Wolf's Rain was the first thing that came to mind. It was very deep and artistic. Great show
Also, Cowboy Bebop. I know it sounds weird, but it kind of transcends all anime stereotypes. I know people who hate anime but still get a kick of Bebop. Plus, the detail in the futuristic world was well done.
And of course, most things Miyazaki. The worlds created in Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle (the castle itself was just incredible), and of course, Spirited Away. Spirited Away is of particular note, because even though it's not groundbreaking plot wise (very similar to Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz), it still manages to create a place of its own in history. Beautiful stuff.
Lastly, Berserk. I'm sick of singing its praises, but truth be told with all the different anime that deal with "mankind's place in the world," none of them do it as powerfully as Berserk. Not Alchemist, not Gurren Lagann, not Death Note... NOTHING.
Code Geass:Great story ,great twist ,amazing inner conflicts.you can never expect what is going to happen next.
Death note: amazing concept ,great story ,make you think .
D.gray man :tragic, amazing twists ,even the fillers was good.,also the style of the drawings are amazing and the characters are well built.

Hmmm...when I saw the topic title my mind went immediatly to these three:
Spoiler: Elfen Lied
Elfen Lied, first of all, because...well, first of all, the imfamous first seven minutes of the first episode. Although I don't consider gore to be a "work of art", it just shows what kind of deeper level the anime gets to. And the whole thing of the humans trying to wipe out the Dinclonius and vice versa, the value of life, and the fact that practically every character has...issues of some sort (one's viscious killer, one saw their dad and sister get murdered, on's got the hots for their cousin, one's overly dedicated to their "dad" to the point of being a trained animal, etc.) it still mangaes to make the series work, and in way, the controversy of the enitire show, and "messed up"-ness of the characters is what makes Elfen Lied...Elfen Lied.
Spoiler: DeathNote/Code Geass
Death Note/Code Geass--Kind of gets you into an...intellectual level of anime doesn't it? The plot twists ("OMG!! SHE'S NOT REALLY---WTF?! THEY'RE ALL ACTUALLY--"), the deeper level of thinking, and foreshadowing (like with what I said for Elfen Lied) for the "the human who uses a Death Note can't go to heaven or hell for eternity"/"this power will curse you with the king's solitude". And then...the complicated plans. I'm telling you, Tsugumi Ohba, Ichiro Ohkouchi and Goro Tanguchi must be geniuses themselves to have thought up all of those "genious lead character plans to get me outta the shit I'm in" things, that, jut when you think youve got them (light and lelouch) figured out, they crack one out at you.
Spirited Away. Er...what Darth Kenshin said.

You know, like "dawn"=night, "twilight"=morning. Not to be confused with the Twilight media franchise every girl and her aunt seem to be obsessed with.
