I would say it is understandable, why he is how he is now. We have seen now, that his "answer" on how to get peace wasnt always as evil as it is today. He also had his righteous dreams, like Naruto has today.
The way his dreams got torn away made him realize, that there must be another way to achieve peace and thats what he is doing now... but it doesnt give him the right to play god ^^ (at least thats what i think..)

But i think Narutos answer will be based on what he has known all his life, something like "i would NEVER give up", cuz thats how Naruto is. Instead of changing his goals in life, he keeps on struggeling until he proved that he is right/the better fighter/whatever you know it all.
