lol....Sooo where are the Anbu???

.....idk, if i had squads of deadly ninjas with kick ass masks backing up my country, i'd probly have a few around in case of a crisis...

Where are the ANbu during all this? You would think they would come out and engage a few of Pein's realms atleast when they atacked....Did Tsunade have them all on missions or something?

Well first, the Anbu where there, keeping the barrier around Konoha up to see intruders. That has happened when Pain entered Konoha, they knew about it right away.

Then there are a few anbu around, 4 of them are with Tsunade.

And then you have to remember Danzou's plot. He was (is still?) the roots leader and he was the one who invented the Anbu system.
So its natural that he has his companions around him.

But im wondering now, if what he has planned makes some sense for him now, because... the village is destroyed... what could he gain from that?

he didnt invent the anbu he created the special division called root which served a different purpose then the anbu's original reason 4 existing which is 2 serve the Hokage directly. Anbu members identities are unknown we donno if we've seen some anbu out of uniform >.>

he did invent the anbu but then after 3rd hokage took over, he created roots within anbu. The difference is that roots members grow up as roots members, where anbu members are selected from the konoha shinobi.

Im sure remember it clearly, but i cant tell you where it was stated. But its a too minor detail to look it up...

i just pressed google to save some time, i dont know where they got their informations from (must be the manga, same spot as me though ) but here goes:
