I have to say I actually prefer your's, you have spent more time on it and actually got a better edge to it, mine is smooth because I took too much off, I used the Magic wand tool with a threshold of "0" then used the eraser at size 5, went around the whole image getting rid of the bulk of leftover white, but didn't go right to the edge, then went around with a size "2" & "1" eraser and removed the rest of the white. The reason it came out smooth is because the eraser is Anti-aliased and therefore takes off a bit more than it really should

I was surprised at how little time it actually took to do, I don't normally do this stuff, but I do muck around with Photoshop a lot.
With regards to the rendering thing, I know that rendering an image is usually seen as processing a 3D scene like your example of a cube, but the term rendering is also used for cropping/cutting out an image

The following quote is from a site I have used before, some of the stuff there is pretty good, and some I could do a better job on myself (not to sound cocky)
Quote:
Question: How do I "create" a render?
Answer: The most commonly used program to "make" renders is Adobe Photoshop. This is done by cropping out a character or object from an image...
