A good friend of mine is going to Iraq to fight in the war. He's 19. His parents didn't approve because they're against the war, and he's been living with me. I didn't know he was going to Iraq, I just thought they had another row. When I confronted him about it, he just said not to worry. But, I feel like something wrong will happen. I told him about it, and he just said that I'm worrying too much. I cried when he left and he said he'll be back. It's been 2 months, and its his 19th birthday. Im not against the war, but I think he should be home. He can't hurt people. He's too caring to be in war. I wish he'd come home. How would you react in this situation?

im sorry, i feel for you. but to be honest, there really isnt much you can do, he is bound my contract to go. i am going to iraq in january, i really dont want to, but i signed up for it. its my duty. no offense :/ all you can do is pray for him and wish the best for his safe return

Actually my friend Mark is going into the marines soon so I'm in a similar situation, only difference his parents do approve so its near impossible for me to make literally any impact on his decision. Its a difficult situation to deal with. My cousin who is like a brother to me was also recently deployed into Iraq.

I would be upset, too...but he committed to go the moment he joined the army/marines/whatever branch. You can't spend all your time worrying about him, though, because you're just going to end up more upset if you dwell upon it. He's right for saying you need not worry about him so much - although I think it's good to keep him in your mind, you don't need to spend lots of time thinking about his return. Thinking about him/his homecoming constantly can only make it more difficult to wait. As hard as that is to do, I don't have much other advice... : \

Well, my brother has been in iraq for 16 months. I hate it, but he has to be there.(cause he signed up). There is no way for you to keep him home, so I would suggest supporting him full heartedly. Make sure you send him lots of packages. Set up times where he can call and you will answer for sure.(I just hate missing my bro's calls). Write him e-mails, write him letters. Get people that don't even know him to send letters. Any way you can make his time over there special, do it. Make sure he knows you still care about him.....so on and so forth. I hope this helps.

most of my friends back in highschool, and friends I have in college have gone off into the marines, army and navy and it's sad really because you worry to much about what could happen to them... but it's their decision, and if you were in his shoes, you wouldn't let someone talk you out of doing something your proud of and such.

what I basically told my friends was, I'm not gonna be sad, I won't worry, I'll try not to miss your company, because this would only aim at making you feel bad that you left everyone to risk your life. People don't win wars very well if their heart aint in the right place.. So your friends and I will be right here waiting, cheering you on, and know you'll return a hero.

That makes a person feel good, and they'll want to win and keep going and be sure to return.
