Videogame Movies -
Mar. 4th, 2009, 01:51 PM
Apparently the new Street Fighter movie sucked (possibly worse than the 1994 one... bizarre). So I wanted to ask you guys a question. Are there ANY video games that you think could be turned into a decent movie, or should the whole idea be scrapped. Most of the recent ones have been pretty awul in terms of quality and also how much money they made (Hitman, Max Payne, Dead or Alive, etc.). But is Hollywood just choosing the wrong games, or are the qualities of a great game so much different from the qualities of a great movie that the concept is just flawed?

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children was pretty good. But you may mean actual live action movies. I liked the Resident Evil series(I think it did ok.)
I think Resistance: Fall of Man would make a great movie. However Hollywood would probably screw it up. I believe it depends on who they have to make the script. If they would use the actual staff behind the making of the game then they probably could make an awesome adaption.

As Crimsonblade said, RE series were quite good. I think the primary factor in making good video game movies is get some decent cast and most of all, decent director. And so far with the exception of RE, all of the other movies lacked in those two respects. To me, they make movies not because they want it to be decent but to attract the every growing gaming audience to the big screen. But they did not. All they did was to destroy the name of the game they made a movie on.
Plus I have noticed that most of the game-based movies focus too much on action and no story line. Hitman tried to do something about that but could not achieve it because of miscast and all. If they want to make good movies, they should take inspiration from the graphic novel- based movies like 300 and Sin City. And also they fail to realize the fact that its the hardest job ever to create movies based on games because of the critisizm so many gamers put on.
I hope in the future, they learn from the mistakes of the others and drastically improve their projects or if anyhting less, they should might as well forget the whole thing altogether

I would say both, some games just cant become movies, it would be impossible, unless they decide to follow the gamesin every detail and to make sequels to that game, but as usuall, Hollywood likes to wrap it all up in one movie and just cut off minor parts of games just to fit it all in a 90-120 minute movie, that's where they go wrong.
I mean Resident Evil to me went pretty well, though they went mainstream and made it more of an action movie than a scary movie like the games were (except Resident Evil 4).
There has been rumours that they are thinking of making a Metroid movie, in my opinion, I hope they people who are actually planning this change their mind as soon as possible, they will just end up destroying it, as that game would be too hard to make a movie off, except if they focus on the story and make sequels.

In ordered for a game to become a successful movie I feel that it should be a successful game and the writers for the game should be the ones to write the script for the movie. But of course Hollywood will never do this because they only want to make money. If the game's creators took over the production of the movie much like Marvel did then we will get a better quality of movies based on games whether it is live action or animation.

The most memorable (sadly) video game film for me was Doom... for all the wrong reasons, because it was quite bad. But funny... because it was so bad.
However, Halo the Movie is coming in 2012, fingers crossed it will be a good one. Halo is a good series of games and it will be interesting to see if the film is any good (Sadly, I'm not counting on it). As for Max Payne, it looks quite awesome and I'm looking forwards to it.
I also think the old Unreal game would make an interesting film... though I guess there wouldn't be much talking in it! But still, the game had a great story. I also think Stalker would make a decent film; lots of things that can go in there.
