Default Avatar Live Action Movie - Dec. 11th, 2008, 01:59 AM

um... I'm usually on top of movie news, but somewhere along the line, I missed the fact that M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and the less memorable Lady in Water) is directing a movie based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Apparently, he's attached for a projected trilogy. He has selected his cast. Obviously, not a lot of big names (has to kids after all) but considering he cast Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense, I'm gonna assume he knows how to cast children. Here's a link: Shyamalan lines up his cast for 'The Last Airbender' | Movie Biz | Hollywood Insider | EW.com

What do you guys think? This is a show I've always wanted to watch, but never got around to it. Will it work in live action, or is this another terrible idea?

Terrible idea. I suspect another soon-to failure like DBZ. Besides, the Sixth Sense by a director like Night was a mere one-off event or a fluke. I don't think he is made for cartoon into movie adaptations. Yes, his name is there in the average directors but lately with crap like Village and Lady in the Water under his belt, my prediction may turn out to be right. Night does not put all of his stuff in his movies (after the success of Sixth Sense) so why should this be any exception? I'm not going to look forward to this.
Besides to Avatar into a movie, he is going to need some gung ho graphics and if they are equivalent to LITW, then its going to suck even more, if thats possible.

I know nothing about this show. I'm gonna watch it at some point, but there are 2 things I like about this. First off, they're making it a trilogy (assuming they are successful... Jumper was also supposed to be a trilogy). I know Avatar isn't an anime, but I like that when they are adapting these movies (Akira is a multi-picture deal too) they're willing to do them justice, and not just haphazardly simplify it to make a quick buck while destroying the source material (which is what Dragonball looks like). Also, I like the the choice of Shyamalan to direct. I think he gets a bad rep because his first film was his best. After Sixth Sense, he's tried to recreate that orininality and always tried to one-up himself with twist endings. I'm curious to see how he envisions something that is based on some straight-forward source material.

Avatar is literally THE best american cartoon product out there in this age (and the fact that this is anime-inspired does not say much about our sad mainstream culture...). It is such a well-done story and the fact that Shyamalan is getting his hands on this has me more than anxious....

"Jasper" playing Sokka is one thing--but he wants a bubblegum pop child to play Zukko?!
Dante Basco is Zukko!

Dante Basco is also Rufio!
"Rufio! Rufio! Rufio!"
