Default Cloverfield Hype Thread! - 01-13-2008

!ATTENTION!
to anyone going to Cloverfield at some point:

Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes out of your day to read into Cloverfield's massive viral marketing campaign. IGN has kindly posted a viral guide for anyone who wants to get some deeper background knowledge. I absolutely recommend you give it a look before seeing the movie, as it makes the film that much better (and more fun). You can check out the guide HERE.

UPDATE: I've officially seen the movie! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

---
I've got my Advance Screening (1/15, 7:00 PM, Denver) tickets and I'm ready to rock! I've been psyched for this movie ever since the teaser before Transformers, and the hype hasn't died since. Even if you don't know much about the film, I'm sure you've seen a few-dozen spots on TV. Anyone as excited as I am?

---

Now Playing: Dark Sector, No More Heroes, Smash Bros. Brawl
Watching: Shuffle!, Soul Eater

This movie comes out on my birthday. It damn well better be good! I am psyched for this. I was awe struck when I saw that preview before Transformers. But I gotta tell you, even if this movie's good, that won't be enough. After all the hype and everything, I've got to have my mouth hanging open for at least 2/3 of that movie, or I will be somewhat disappointed.

I think it looks like garbage. If your concept of "advertising" includes completely neglecting to acknowledge your main plot, you must be relying completely on special effects instead of story or character development. I guess it might look cool, but I have a feeling it will be diappointing.

Basically, a guy named Rob has a going away party in NY, when a giant monster attacks the city. Chaos ensues.. think of it as the US equivalent of Japan's Godzilla. Here's a more in-depth summary from IGN:
On the eve of his departure for Japan, Rob (Michael Stahl-David) sees his going-away party as an opportunity to confess unresolved feelings and tie up loose ends. His agenda takes an unexpected turn when a jolt shakes the revelers. The crowd quiets down to watch news reports of an earthquake, then rushes to the roof to assess the damage. A fireball explodes on the distant horizon. A power failure follows. Confusion gives way to panic as the partygoers stumble through the blackout and into the streets. Amid the human screams and one inhuman roar, Rob and his friends must traverse a landscape that has changed, overtaken by something otherworldly, terrifying, monstrous…

Optimism shall set you free! The advertising campaign for this film has been more complex and deep than any other film I've heard of (including Blair Witch), and it's doing it's job well. Regardless of whether the movie is good itself, people will still line up to see it in all it's mysterious glory. It's delivering a fun and engaging experience.. something a small sliver of movies has been able to accomplish. That's what matters.

We already have Godzilla. And the American re-make of Godzilla. We don't need more!
