Why does Rem not kill Kira?

I am watching Deathnote the second time now and I wonder why Rem doesn't kill Yagami Light when he kills Watari and L.

Since the deaths are taking effect after 40 seconds i guess the Shinigami is dying as soon as the person dies which would kill the person it wants to protect.
40 Seconds should be more than enough to write down three names. If the deathgod would die earlier, why could he kill Watari and L? But not Light?

cause killing light would destroy misa since she loves him and he couldn't break her heart .

its simple just as roza said ... Rem decided to do anything will make misa happy so how could she kill light (kira)

If Rem killed Light then Misa would be really sad. Rem only wants Misa to be happy but she can't be happy if Light is dead.

wow let me say for the 4th time why Rem did not kill Light, but in a different way...the only thing Rem wanted was for Misa to be happy, and for her that was being in love and caring for Light...thats why he lived....

I think Misa's happiness had something to do with it, but there may have been something else. I think the main reason Rem didn't kill Light was because Light's life belonged to Ryuuk. In the end of the series, Ryuuk told Light "It will be I who writes your name in my Death Note." It was never stated as a rule, but I do believe that the Life of the Death Note user belongs to the Shinigami who gave the Death Note to the human.

Rem may have been apprehensive about killing Light in fear that she might piss off Ryuuk. However, she did say that if Light ever hurt Misa, she would kill him. And I do believe she would have.

I believe when Ryuuk said that he was meaning (he never expected to be the one who'll write light's name in the death note) ... I remember Rem told Misa about that Shinigami who fall in love with a human girl then he wrote the name of the man that was bothering her ... I know he's not a death note user but I think it doesn't matter ... but I think you r right about the point that Rem might piss off Ryuuk by killing light cuz its a deal between the shinigami and the human as Ryuuk said "didn't I say in the beginning at the time of your death,I'll be the one who'll write down your name in the death note that deal made between the shinigami and the first human ".

i don't think it was rule it was more like the destiny of light in other words ,everything will turn out in way so that ryukk will be the one who writes light name ,for example in this situation rems feelings for misa will prevent him from doing so.
