Okay, as far as the battle of wits goes, even if in the end he didn't win, i think L was better (take the time he went on the news and light killed off his double immediately w/out even thinking there could be more to the broadcast). If L had his own personal shinigamii and deathnote from the beginning too, he would have figured out w/ 100% certainty who kira was in like a day, Light had some obvious advantages.
As far as who what characterI like better, as usual im gonna have to stick w/ the badass and say light. He's smart, hot, and comes pretty close to world domination. Need I say anymore? Oh, well, he is insane too... but still...

Light all the way. It's just so fun to see him in action in both anime and manga. And his pure slick/positive attitude. Plus he does have the wits to beat almost anyone. That's a winner in my book. While L is also smart but lacked the proof for his suspicion. They're both great in their own ways but I'd still be backing Light all the way.

L has proven on several occasions that he def can beat light, just not that lucky

I like L's weirdness and Light's insanity both.

Please allow me to own all of you Light supporters and show you why Lawliet is much better.

Yes, Lawliet was prone to strange mannerisms, as opposed to Light's well-kept "sheltered genius," and yes, Light may very well win in the end, but that's not because he is smarter or better than Lawliet in any way. Look at the facts as they are: Light had supernatural powers to kill with a notebook, and he also had Shinigami that were assisting him in things (those who say Ryuk did not assist Light are, plain and simple, idiots and they clearly did not pay attention to the show...what do you call telling Light where all the cameras are? And telling him that Raye Penbar is following him? And no one can forget that Rem helped him in the biggest way possible...I"m not gonna give away any spoilers, but we all know what Rem does with her last remaining life...). When you look at it in perspective, the fact that Lawliet figured out as much as he did is nothing short of amazing, all Light did was get lucky and find a book...Lawliet figured out about the existance of Shinigami, and Death Notes,and The Trade, he even knew that Light and Misa were the two Kira's, it's just that no one would believe him. The sad truth is that Lawliet can never have won, no matter what (a Shinigami would interfere eventually, or Light would get scared and make the trade, or Misa would tell Light Lawliet's real name), even though I am an avid Lawliet supporter, I can accept that fact, but I take comfort in knowing that Lawliet did unbelievably well in figuring out as much as he did. If anyone thinks they can supply a concise and intellectual rebuttle for this and would like to challenge my opinion of Lawliet being better than Light...please do, I would love to prove you wrong.

I would have to agree with people that said L was smarter....Yes we know yagami was smart, but L didn't have the crutch(death note) that yagami had, and yet, he was able to figure everything out....even if he didn't reveal all of his findings to others, I think inside He was just hoping Kira wasn't yagami or that yagami would change.
