Default Hurricane Ike in Texas - 09-16-2008

Man, when i saw the pics and vids on the news channel, i was really shocked because of the devastation the hurricane caused, first in the Carribean areas and then Texas. About 4 million people without power and to top it all, mass evacuation. Is it me or has the major natural disasters have doubled during the past two years or so?
We have some members from Texas who have gone inactive since the hurricane. One of them is Casey6. I wish them all the best. I think that is all i can do from where i am sitting.
I hope the government takes care of the damages and make amends sooner rather than later. Screw the elections.

Story
Texas has begun what is being described as the biggest search and rescue effort in its history following Hurricane Ike.
At least 2,000 people have been rescued but many thousands more are believed to have ignored the mandatory order to evacuate before Saturday's storm.
The death toll rose to 30 as Ike swept on from Texas into the mid-US, with heavy rain causing flooding.
Millions of people are without power and Houston is under a week-long curfew as work continues to restore services.
While many schools remained shut, there were signs of a return to normality on Monday, as the city's two airports resumed limited services and some shops and restaurants opened for business.
Five people died in Galveston Bay, an island city south-east of Houston which bore the brunt of the storm as Ike swept ashore on Saturday, bringing 13ft (4m) waves and 110mph (175km/h) winds.

.... there's no more balance in the nature... even the ice in north and south pole are melting because of too much heat.... islands are disappearing... floods are becoming worst...its really scary... everything are on its extremes.... its the fault of people also, most of us are taking for granted on how to take care of nature... so nature is just returning back what we are giving her...

i also have a friend living there(texas).... i also hope for her and her family's safety...

Thank you Vergil for making this thread. This thing was so freakin huge, before it even made landfall in Galveston, I started feeling high force winds just sitting in my backyard in Houston, Tx. Alot of galveston and near by areas are just gone...Heck I just got my power back this morning 20 mins before I left to school. The damage even around my neighborhood is insane. You got people with half roofs, big @$$ holes in peoples roofs, missing shingles, and almost 99% percent in my and my neighboring neighborhoods lost both sides of the fence, like standing on one side of the street...all the houses are visible as if no partition. Its crazy, but hey its unfortunately life now-a-days.
The size of this storm was just mind boggling, and hope every texan, here at BN are good along with their families.
I am speaking to Casey at the moment via gmail XD.

That really sucks, but it isn't a surprise (don't mean that in a bad way at all). These natural disasters have been occuring on and off for the past couple of years for a reason, nature needs to 'balanced'.

I hope everyone from Texas is okay, and the government does do something about it... Like you said Vergil, screw the elections. ^_^

The government has to provide a realistic way to move mass amounts of people, without cost to those who can't afford to evacuate. They seem to have no problem spending the money to move mass amounts of troops to foreign countries and set up living situations for them. So they should have no frigging problem at all evacuating mass amounts of people from one state to another in their own country, and providing them with with the same.

The world has succumbed to greed. Things won't change because our leaders don't want to spend the money necessary to make the changes needed to prevent these kinds of things. That applies to both evacuating for natural disasters and for global warming. It's all about money. Nothing else.

My thoughts go out to those who live in Texas. Especially those who just didn't have the means to evacuate. Ike sucks.

There's really not a whole lot that could be done to prevent these disasters. They're called "natural disasters" for a reason. Believe what you want: global warming, the "signs of the last days" mentioned in Matthew, or whatever. As Mushiro said, we as a people need to find a way to minimize damages by getting people to safety. Our government needs to formulate plans as a way of pre-empting any truly catastrophic events, as opposed to responding to them when they already occur. Thankfully, even though this is an election year, we have an incumbent President (as opposed to someone running for re-election). Plus, it's Bush's home state. I'm sure they'll handle this much better than they handled Katrina.

Thank you Vergil.

I live more inner Texas. Althought I have family that live in Houston and close to Galveston. I spoke with them today and everyone is fine. They were lucky enough to have had some damage, but still alive.
