Gotei 13 came from nothing more than Captain Commander creating the Shinigami Academy. They made it sound like he created the Gotei 13, as the "original guard" was 200 years ago, but at the same time, he doesn't appear to be the first Captain Commander. So what was around before him?

Also, I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about the original guard. Who they were, what happened to them, etc.
