I read through all the replies, and I really don't think this Ashido is Aaroniero trying to mess with Rukia. If he was, he would probably use the same sword, seeing as how it would be something by which Rukia could recognize him with. Plus, if he wasn't already in Kaien form, he would have to transform in front of her to show her he was Kaien. It seems too complicated for a filler. And since it is filler - it probably has little to no chance of tying in to the manga storyline. Although, he does live in a cave and covers his face, similar to what Aaroniero does in the manga later on.
If anything, Ashido resembled Isshin or Kenpachi more in his tattered dress, large frame, and aggressive techniques. I was really surprised nobody else mentioned this already. And didn't his sword's edge look awfully ragged? It all suggested Kenpachi to me more than anyone else. However, this isn't to say there's any relation between them, because these things are probably due to Ashido's having lived in Hueco Mundo for a long time by himself (considering what we know, he is a shinigami from the past). But they shouldn't be overlooked, either.

And I agree with this too - the animation looked a lot like the first Bleach movie. I noticed it most in Ichigo and Rukia's faces. I don't know a lot about animation, but maybe different people work on the filler episodes? It would explain the difference.
