I really thought it was too long as is. Maybe because of the pacing. I didn't like how quickly Light turned evil. it started out as a philosophical epic about man's place the grand scheme of things in the world. I was expecting that kind of open-to-interpretation undertone throughout the show, but Light was killing cops by like episode 5. If he descended into the "dark side" a bit more gradually, maybe I wouldn't have minded. But I felt the show turned into a glorified mystery show.

I agree with that, although I became a little bored when we kept seeing him in his room watching tv at the beginning. Also, if they had stretched out the time when he manipulated the police--who is staffed by idiots anyway except for Afro-kun--and shed more light on Kira's temp replacement then that would have been alright as well.

I guess my thing is, I wanted Light to be sympathetic. I liked being conflicted about his mission But then he was killing cops in episode 5, and Light shifted from Anti-Hero to flat out Antagonist (I don't care what any one says, Light is NOT an anti-hero once he started killing innocent people), and the show became "who's gonna catch Light?" instead of any thing deeper, like "can mankind truly attain an acceptable society without the aid of Divine powers?"

It's kind of like the Star Wars prequels (I hate to bring them up). But basically, Annakin slowly descended into the Dark Side, and the audience empathized with everything he had to go through. We felt bad for him, and a lot of people probably were thinking they would've done the same thing in his case. Then, he killed the kids in the Jedi Temple, and all of a sudden, we wanted him to get mauled. The movie was no longer about the philosophies of the Jedi and Sith, and the whole "evil is based on perspective" thing. That had to happen, since we know Vader was ultimately evil. It's the same with Light. Once he started killing innocent people, he lost any empathy. The show stopped being about philosophy, justice, and religion, and turned into a more mature Detective Conan. And that would be fine... if it didn't happen so early.

Well it not may be new to the movie industry, it was certainly a gush of fresh air in the anime industry. In the initial stages, u cannot compare the movie and the anime because in SW, Anakin was a good guy and then became corrupted by power while Light was a bad guy in the sense that he took the justice in his own hands. But after that, SW and DN became very much like when both of them became corrupted by power.

I'm not saying Death Note wasn't creative. I'm just saying that Light turned evil way too quickly. Light wasn't always the bad guy. When he was punishing criminals, there were intersting philisophical and religious undertones to the show (hence, Kira's supporters). He became evil when he started killiing innocent people in like the 5th episode, and then it became a murder mystery. I would've liked his descent to be a bit slower, especially since the show was 37 episodes. It's not like there was so much material to work with. They coudl've stretched that out a bit longer and have it be more thought provoking.

Longer? That would just ruion the whole thing, Just like Lost or something....It just does not have a story which can be longer without people getting bored....like come on! Who here would want to watch Death Note for years and each episode they just make plans how to bust each other...

If it were longer the schemes would have been less complex. Towards the end Light started to lose it I think, his final "plan" was a little weak in my opinion. He could have had more back up plans like he had with some of his earlier schemes, instead he just assumed that Near would just leave the Death Note alone and only replace a page instead of the whole book.
