Comic book fans used to be a pretty small group overall, but once Hollywood got their hands on Comic properties and started to treat them with care, Comic books exploded and I loved it (you can't even compare Comic-Con now to what it was 10 years ago). I want the same thing to happen with anime/manga, but so far, it's not looking good. Speed Racer was a debacle and probably the biggest flop of the summer, and Dragonball doesn't look too strong. They need to find the proper directors with visions and understandings of the characters to make these work (like Bryan Singer did for X-Men and Sam Raimi for Spiderman). And they need to use properties that would make good live action movies. Dragonball isn't one of them: it was too over the top, and a lot of its appeal was based on silliness (like using dragonballs to wish for panties). I'm afraid that if this bombs, after Speed Racer, Hollywood execs might steer away from Japanese properties, which is unfortunate, because some of them could be truly spectacular (like the in development Akira and Ghost in the Shell properties). I hope those projects aren't abandoned (like Evangelion apparently was) and they take the art of making live action adaptations of manga properties to new levels.
I heard that the Japanese are going to make their own film version of DBZ, whether it's true I don't know. It may be a rumour, but I definetely hope it isn't one.
