Aizen's not serious. He's keeping Ichigo alive just for the thrill of it, rather than dealing with him now before he explores more of his potential.
I think it's Shunsui...j/k. The most serious character is Tousen methinks. We've never seen him crack a joke, unlike Byakuya (depending on whether you want to count those Shinigami cup golden scenes), and for him to outright reject SS means he is not playing at all.
