The short answer is, Light would have been screwed. L knew of the shinigami's existence, had never truly stopped suspecting Light and Misa and was willing to do what it took to prove his theory correct, including testing the notebook to see if the 13 day rule was real. I hate to say it but that's why the author had to kill him off. L was simply too smart for his own good.
